Ben Wilson (English artist)
Ben Wilson (born 1963), often referred to as the "Chewing Gum Man," is a British artist known for his miniature paintings on discarded chewing gum on the streets of London and elsewhere. He transforms flattened pieces of gum into tiny, intricate artworks using acrylic paints.
Wilson's work is considered both art and an act of community engagement. He often spends hours meticulously painting each piece, often at the request of passersby who commission personalized works. His art addresses themes of urban decay, consumerism, and the overlooked beauty of everyday objects.
While his work is technically illegal (considered minor vandalism), Wilson has largely been tolerated by local authorities and communities, who view his art as a positive contribution to the urban environment. He has created thousands of these miniature artworks over the years and continues to do so. His work can be found predominantly in Muswell Hill, North London, but also in other locations across the UK and internationally. He has exhibited his work in galleries, bringing attention to his unusual street art practice. He is self-taught and does not sell his chewing gum art, seeing it as a gift to the public.
