Battle of Lwów (1695)
The Battle of Lwów, also known as the Battle of Lviv, was a military engagement that took place near the city of Lwów (modern-day Lviv, Ukraine) in 1695 during the Polish-Ottoman War (1683-1699), a part of the larger Great Turkish War.
The battle pitted Polish forces under the command of Stanisław Jabłonowski against a Crimean Tatar raiding party. The Tatars, vassals of the Ottoman Empire, frequently launched incursions into Polish territory for plunder and to capture slaves.
Jabłonowski, a skilled and experienced commander, successfully ambushed and decisively defeated the Tatar force. The victory at Lwów significantly hampered Tatar raiding activity in the region for a period. This contributed to the overall Polish war effort against the Ottoman Empire, helping to secure the eastern borders and allowing Polish forces to focus on other fronts. The battle, while not as large as some of the other engagements in the war, was important in maintaining Polish morale and disrupting Ottoman-Tatar war efforts.
