Area Code 615 (band)

Area Code 615 was a Nashville-based country rock studio project that released one album in 1970 on Polydor Records. The band was essentially a supergroup composed of leading session musicians associated with the Nashville music scene, who were known for their work on countless country, pop, and rock recordings.

The name "Area Code 615" is a reference to the telephone area code for Nashville at the time.

The group's self-titled debut album showcased experimental arrangements and instrumental virtuosity, blending country, rock, jazz, and classical elements. While not a commercial success upon its initial release, Area Code 615 has since gained a cult following among music collectors and enthusiasts of progressive country and instrumental music.

Key musicians involved in the project included:

  • Charlie McCoy: Harmonica, Keyboards, Vibraphone
  • Mac Gayden: Guitar
  • Wayne Moss: Guitar, Vocals
  • David Briggs: Keyboards
  • Norbert Putnam: Bass
  • Kenny Buttrey: Drums
  • Weldon Myrick: Steel Guitar
  • Buddy Spicher: Fiddle

Following the release of the album, the group members continued their careers as in-demand session players in Nashville. The album Area Code 615 remains a notable example of the experimental and innovative spirit that occasionally emerged within the Nashville music scene during the late 1960s and early 1970s.
