Albert Bachmann (philologist)

Albert Bachmann (12 April 1863 – 27 July 1921) was a Swiss philologist and dialectologist, best known for his extensive work on Swiss German dialects.

Born in Steckborn, Switzerland, Bachmann studied at the Universities of Zurich, Berlin, and Strasbourg. He earned his doctorate in 1887 from the University of Zurich. He later became a professor of German language and literature at the same institution.

Bachmann's primary area of research was the study of Swiss German dialects. He played a pivotal role in documenting and analyzing the diverse linguistic landscape of Switzerland. He is particularly recognized for his contributions to the Schweizerisches Idiotikon, a comprehensive dictionary of Swiss German dialects, which remains a crucial resource for researchers. He served as the editor of the Schweizerisches Idiotikon from 1895 until his death.

His work focused on the systematic recording of dialectal variations in vocabulary, grammar, and pronunciation. Bachmann also explored the historical development of these dialects and their relationship to Standard German.
