A Christmas Carol (1982 film)

A Christmas Carol (also known as George C. Scott's A Christmas Carol) is a 1984 British-American made-for-television film adaptation of Charles Dickens' classic 1843 novella A Christmas Carol. Directed by Clive Donner, who had previously edited the 1951 film adaptation Scrooge, it stars George C. Scott as Ebenezer Scrooge.

The film is considered by many to be one of the most faithful and best-regarded screen adaptations of Dickens' story, largely due to its strong adherence to the original text and Scott's critically acclaimed performance. Its depiction of Victorian London and its emphasis on the social commentary present in the novel also contribute to its high standing.

The supporting cast includes Frank Finlay as Jacob Marley, Angela Pleasence as the Ghost of Christmas Past, Edward Woodward as the Ghost of Christmas Present, Michael Carter as Bob Cratchit, Susannah York as Mrs. Cratchit, and David Warner as Bob Cratchit.

The film's narrative follows the traditional plot of A Christmas Carol. Ebenezer Scrooge, a miserly and bitter old man, is visited on Christmas Eve by the ghost of his deceased business partner, Jacob Marley, who warns him of the fate that awaits him if he does not change his ways. Subsequently, Scrooge is visited by the Ghosts of Christmas Past, Present, and Yet to Come, each showing him scenes from his life and the lives of others, leading him to a profound realization of the error of his ways. He awakens on Christmas morning a changed man, embracing generosity and compassion.

A Christmas Carol (1984 film) was filmed on location in Shrewsbury, Shropshire, England, lending authenticity to its portrayal of 19th-century London. The score was composed by Nick Bicat. The film premiered on CBS in the United States and has become a perennial Christmas television favorite.
