1st Guards Reserve Division (German Empire)
The 1st Guards Reserve Division was a reserve infantry division of the German Army during World War I. It was formed in August 1914 as part of the mobilization at the outbreak of the war. The division was part of the Guards Reserve Corps and primarily composed of reservists from the Prussian Guards units.
Throughout the war, the 1st Guards Reserve Division fought predominantly on the Western Front. It participated in major battles, including the First Battle of the Marne, the Battle of the Somme, and the Third Battle of Ypres. The division also saw action in quieter sectors of the front, engaging in trench warfare and holding defensive positions.
The division's order of battle typically included two reserve Guards infantry brigades, each consisting of two regiments. It also included artillery, pioneer, signals, and supply units. The specific composition of these units could vary throughout the war.
Like other German divisions on the Western Front, the 1st Guards Reserve Division suffered heavy casualties. It participated in the German spring offensive of 1918 and then fought in defensive battles during the Allied counteroffensives.
Following the Armistice in November 1918, the 1st Guards Reserve Division was demobilized and disbanded as part of the overall demobilization of the German Army.
