Ælfwold I (bishop of Crediton)

Ælfwold I was a medieval Bishop of Crediton in Devon, England. He held the office from around 1027 until his death circa 1046. Historical records concerning Ælfwold I are relatively sparse, and much of what is known about him comes from surviving episcopal lists and charters of the period. He succeeded Lyfing as Bishop of Crediton and was, in turn, succeeded by Leofric, who would later become the first Bishop of Exeter. Ælfwold I's episcopate spanned a period of significant political and religious change in England, including the reign of Cnut the Great and the growing Norman influence that would eventually lead to the Norman Conquest. While no specific details of his actions or contributions as bishop are widely documented, his presence in the episcopal see during this time is historically significant.
