Zwei Gesänge, Op. 1 (Schoenberg)
Zwei Gesänge, Op. 1 (meaning "Two Songs, Op. 1") is a song cycle composed by Arnold Schoenberg in 1898. It marks Schoenberg's first published work, showcasing his early compositional style, heavily influenced by late Romanticism, particularly that of Johannes Brahms and Richard Wagner.
The two songs are:
- "Dank" (Thanks) - The text is by Karl von Levetzow.
- "Abschied" (Farewell) - The text is by an anonymous poet.
The songs are scored for voice and piano. They demonstrate Schoenberg's mastery of traditional harmony and melodic writing before his later exploration of atonality and twelve-tone technique. While stylistically different from his later, more radical works, these songs provide insight into Schoenberg's musical foundations and his early development as a composer. They are frequently performed and studied as examples of late Romantic German lieder. The opus number "1" signifies their official recognition by Schoenberg as a significant and representative piece of his early output.
