William Shakespeare (baptised 26 April 1564 – 23 April 1616) was an English playwright, poet, and actor, widely regarded as the greatest writer in the English language and the world's greatest dramatist. He is often called England's national poet and the "Bard of Avon" (or simply "the Bard"). His extant works, including collaborations, consist of some 39 plays, 154 sonnets, two long narrative poems, and a few other verses, some of uncertain authorship. His plays have been translated into every major living language and are performed more often than those of any other playwright.

Life

Shakespeare's life is shrouded in some mystery, with relatively few reliable biographical details. He was born and raised in Stratford-upon-Avon, Warwickshire. He married Anne Hathaway in 1582 and had three children: Susanna, and twins Hamnet and Judith. The years between 1585 and 1592, known as his "lost years", remain largely undocumented. His emergence in London as an actor and playwright in the late 1590s marked the beginning of his phenomenal success. He became a prominent member of the Lord Chamberlain's Men (later the King's Men), a successful acting company for which he wrote many of his plays. He retired to Stratford around 1610 and died there in 1616.
