Vladimir Rubin

Vladimir Rubin (1923-2011) was a Soviet and Israeli mathematician specializing in functional analysis. He is best known for his work on the theory of vector spaces and, in particular, for the Rubin-Stone Lemma, a significant result in the theory of uniform algebras.

Rubin received his doctorate from Moscow State University under the supervision of Israel Gelfand. He emigrated to Israel in the 1970s and continued his research career there.

His contributions to mathematics include significant advances in areas related to commutative Banach algebras, harmonic analysis, and the representation theory of groups. The Rubin-Stone Lemma provides conditions under which a function can be uniformly approximated by elements of a given algebra. It is a generalization of the Stone-Weierstrass theorem.
