Tommy Wright (footballer, born 1963)

Tommy Wright (born 21 October 1963) is a former Northern Ireland international football goalkeeper and manager.

Playing Career

Wright began his professional career at Linfield in Northern Ireland before moving to England to play for clubs including Newcastle United, Hull City, and Wrexham. He also had a spell in Scotland with St Johnstone. Wright earned 31 caps for Northern Ireland, representing his country at the 1986 FIFA World Cup. He was known for his shot-stopping ability and consistency between the posts.

Managerial Career

Following his playing career, Wright transitioned into coaching and management. His most notable managerial role was with St Johnstone in the Scottish Premiership, a position he held from 2013 to 2020. During his tenure at St Johnstone, Wright achieved considerable success, including leading the club to their first-ever Scottish Cup victory in 2014 and qualifying for European football on multiple occasions. He was known for his tactical astuteness and ability to build a strong team spirit. After leaving St Johnstone, he managed Kilmarnock for a short period. He also held the position of manager at Dunfermline Athletic.
