The Knight (novel)
The Knight is the first novel in The Saxon Stories (also known as The Last Kingdom series in some countries) by Bernard Cornwell, published in 2005. It is followed by The Lord of the North.
The novel tells the story of Uhtred of Bebbanburg, a Saxon boy born in Northumbria during the 9th century. The narrative begins with Uhtred's childhood and his capture by the Danes. He is raised by Ragnar the Elder and becomes deeply integrated into Viking culture, eventually participating in raids and battles.
The plot centers on Uhtred's struggle with his identity, torn between his Saxon heritage and his Danish upbringing. He is forced to navigate the complex political landscape of Anglo-Saxon England, which is under constant threat from Viking invasions. The novel covers events significant in the formation of England, including the invasion of the Great Heathen Army and the reign of King Alfred the Great. Uhtred's allegiance shifts as he attempts to reclaim his ancestral lands and navigate treacherous alliances.
