Sugarloaf Mountain (Greene County, New York)

Sugarloaf Mountain is a prominent peak located in Greene County, New York, within the Catskill Mountains. It is situated within the Town of Hunter and is part of the Catskill Park. The mountain is known for its distinctive conical shape, resembling a loaf of sugar, hence its name.

Geography:

Sugarloaf Mountain rises to an elevation of approximately 3,800 feet (1,158 meters). It is characterized by steep slopes and a heavily forested landscape, primarily composed of deciduous trees. The mountain contributes to the watershed of the Schoharie Creek and other local waterways.

Recreation:

The mountain is a popular destination for hiking and outdoor recreation. Marked trails provide access to the summit, offering panoramic views of the surrounding Catskill Mountains, including Hunter Mountain and Plateau Mountain. Hiking to the summit is considered moderately strenuous, requiring some physical fitness. Backcountry camping is permitted in designated areas within the Catskill Park.
