Sekō Higa

Sekō Higa (比嘉 世幸, 1898-1966) was a prominent Okinawan martial artist and a key figure in the development of modern Karate-do. He is primarily known as a student and close associate of Chojun Miyagi, the founder of Goju-ryu Karate.

Higa began his karate training under Kanryo Higaonna (also sometimes romanized as Higashionna), Miyagi’s teacher, at a young age. After Higaonna's death, Higa became one of Miyagi's most devoted and influential students. He played a crucial role in preserving and transmitting Miyagi's Goju-ryu system.

Higa founded his own dojo, the Kokusai Karate-do Goju-ryu Higa-ha Kyokai (International Karate-do Goju-ryu Higa School Association). While deeply rooted in Miyagi’s teachings, Higa’s branch of Goju-ryu developed some unique characteristics over time. His interpretations and emphasis on certain techniques contributed to the broader evolution of Goju-ryu.

Higa dedicated his life to teaching and promoting Goju-ryu karate both in Okinawa and internationally. He trained many notable karateka, and his students have continued to disseminate his teachings across the globe. His legacy remains a significant part of Goju-ryu history and the broader Okinawan martial arts tradition.
