Sebastes

Sebastes is a genus of ray-finned fishes in the family Scorpaenidae. These fishes are commonly known as rockfishes, rockcod, or Pacific ocean perch. They are found primarily in the North Pacific Ocean, though some species occur in other oceans, including the Atlantic and Arctic.

Sebastes is a large and diverse genus, containing over 100 recognized species. They exhibit a wide range of sizes, coloration, and habitat preferences. Many species are long-lived, with some individuals documented to live for over 200 years. This longevity, coupled with relatively late maturity for some species, makes them particularly vulnerable to overfishing.

Rockfishes are generally bottom-dwelling fishes, inhabiting rocky reefs, kelp forests, and other structured habitats. They are predatory, feeding on a variety of invertebrates and smaller fish.
