Round Barn (Van Wert, Ohio)
The Round Barn in Van Wert, Ohio, is a historic barn located in Washington Township. It is a well-preserved example of a true circular barn, a relatively uncommon architectural form, particularly in Ohio. Built in 1911 by J.L. Poling for owner J.P. McDowell, the barn was designed to maximize space and efficiency for dairy farming.
The barn features a concrete foundation, a wood frame structure, and a gambrel roof. The circular design allowed for easy monitoring of livestock and facilitated efficient feeding and cleaning. The central silo further contributed to the barn's functionality.
The Van Wert Round Barn is significant for its architectural design and its contribution to the agricultural history of the region. It stands as a testament to innovative farming practices in the early 20th century. The barn was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1980. While privately owned, the barn is a recognized landmark in Van Wert County.
