Poonjar
Poonjar is a small town located in the eastern part of Kottayam district in the state of Kerala, India. Historically, it was the capital of the Poonjar Kingdom, a medieval dynasty that ruled over a significant portion of central Travancore.
The Poonjar Kingdom claimed descent from the Pandya dynasty of Madurai. According to legend, the Pandya king Manavikrama Kulashekhara Perumal, along with his family and retinue, migrated to Kerala in the 12th century CE to escape political turmoil. They established their kingdom with Poonjar as its capital.
The kingdom played a notable role in the history of Kerala, especially in relation to the larger kingdoms of Travancore and Cochin. It maintained a degree of autonomy despite often being subject to the influence of these larger powers. The Poonjar royal family had significant influence in the region and held considerable land ownership.
Today, Poonjar is known for its historical significance and several ancient temples, including the Meenakshi Temple, which showcases unique architectural styles and murals. The town and its surrounding areas are primarily agricultural, with rubber and spices being important crops. Tourism also plays a role in the local economy, drawing visitors interested in the area's history and religious sites.
