Nuliajuk

Nuliajuk is a significant figure in Inuit mythology, particularly in regions of Arctic Canada and Greenland. She is a sea goddess and the guardian of marine animals. Often described as an old woman with only one finger, Nuliajuk (also known by various other names, including Sedna, Arnakuagsak, and Taleelayu) holds considerable power over the success of Inuit hunters.

Her origin story varies depending on the region, but a common thread involves a tragic past where she is betrayed, either by her father or by a giant bird, and thrown into the sea. As she attempts to cling to the boat, her fingers are cut off and transformed into various sea creatures, which she subsequently controls.

In Inuit belief, Nuliajuk controls the abundance of seals, walruses, whales, and other marine life. When hunters are unsuccessful, it is often believed that Nuliajuk is angry because taboos have been broken or offenses have been committed against her. Shamans play a vital role in appeasing her anger, often traveling to her underwater dwelling in a trance to comb her hair, soothe her, and entreat her to release the animals for the benefit of the community.

Nuliajuk's story is a central element in Inuit cosmology and spiritual life, highlighting the importance of respecting the natural world and adhering to traditional customs to ensure survival in the harsh Arctic environment. Her legend serves as a constant reminder of the delicate balance between humans and the sea.
