New Haw

New Haw is a village in the Runnymede borough of Surrey, England. It lies approximately 20 miles (32 km) southwest of London. Historically part of the parish of Byfleet, New Haw developed significantly in the 19th and 20th centuries with the arrival of the railway and subsequent residential expansion.

History:

Until the 19th century, the area now known as New Haw was largely agricultural land. The construction of the London and Southampton Railway in 1838, with a station initially named "Weybridge" (later renamed "Byfleet and New Haw"), spurred development. The name "New Haw" likely derives from "Haw," an Old English word meaning enclosure or hedged area. The "New" prefix distinguished it from the existing settlement of Haw in nearby Woodham.
