Minor Threat (album)

Minor Threat is the first and only eponymous extended play (EP) and the second overall release by the American hardcore punk band Minor Threat. It was released in June 1981 through Dischord Records.

The EP is considered a landmark recording in the hardcore punk genre and is notable for its raw sound, Ian MacKaye's impassioned vocals, and the band's politically charged lyrics, particularly those addressing social alienation, conformity, and the burgeoning straight edge movement. It features eight tracks, including the anthemic "Straight Edge," which codified the principles of drug-free, alcohol-free, and promiscuity-free living that became associated with the straight edge subculture. Other notable tracks include "Filler," "I Don't Wanna Hear It," and "Guilty of Being White," a song that has generated controversy for its ambiguous and potentially problematic lyrics, despite MacKaye's subsequent explanations of its intended message.

The Minor Threat EP was re-released several times, often packaged with the band's debut EP, First Two 7's, and later incorporated into the band's complete discography compilation albums. Its influence on hardcore punk and subsequent alternative music genres is widely acknowledged.
