List of members of the Privy Council for Canada (1948–1968)
This list comprises individuals who were sworn into the Queen's Privy Council for Canada between January 1, 1948, and December 31, 1968. Membership in the Privy Council is a lifetime appointment bestowed upon individuals who have held significant positions in Canadian government, primarily cabinet ministers, but also including Speakers of the House and Senate, Chief Justices, and occasionally other distinguished Canadians. This period covers the later years of the Prime Ministership of William Lyon Mackenzie King, through the Prime Ministerships of Louis St. Laurent, John Diefenbaker, and Lester B. Pearson.
Membership in the Privy Council is a prerequisite for serving as a cabinet minister. The council advises the Crown on the exercise of its executive authority. Although the Privy Council as a whole rarely meets, its members are granted the title "The Honourable" for life (certain exceptions apply). Newly appointed cabinet ministers are sworn into the Privy Council before taking office, and they remain members even after leaving cabinet.
The following lists are not exhaustive and are primarily organized chronologically by date of appointment. It is important to note that individuals may have been appointed to the Privy Council outside of this time frame, but their names would not appear within this specific compilation unless their initial appointment fell within the 1948-1968 window. For a complete listing of all Privy Council members, consult official government records. This list serves as a snapshot of the individuals who were granted this honour during a significant period of Canadian political history.
