James Moorhouse (politician)

James Moorhouse (born 1 January 1924, died 8 March 2022) was a British Conservative politician who served as a Member of the European Parliament (MEP) for the London South constituency from 1979 to 1999.

Moorhouse was educated at St Paul's School and King's College Cambridge. Before entering politics, he had a career in engineering and business, including working for British European Airways (BEA).

Elected to the European Parliament in the first direct elections in 1979, he represented the London South constituency for the Conservative Party for five consecutive terms. He was a prominent figure in the European People's Party group (EPP), the dominant centre-right political group in the Parliament.

During his time in the European Parliament, Moorhouse was known for his work on transport policy, particularly aviation, and for his advocacy for the completion of the Single Market. He also served on various committees, including the Transport Committee and the Economic and Monetary Affairs Committee.

Moorhouse retired from the European Parliament in 1999. He remained active in public life, contributing to debates on European integration and transport issues. He was a strong supporter of the European Union throughout his political career.
