Issyk (river)
The Issyk is a river located in the Almaty Region of Kazakhstan. It flows from the northern slopes of the Trans-Ili Alatau mountain range, part of the Tian Shan mountains, generally northward into the Ili River basin. The river is fed primarily by snowmelt and glacial runoff.
The Issyk River is relatively short in length. It is known for its role in the formation of Lake Issyk, a natural alpine lake that was once a popular tourist destination. In 1963, a catastrophic mudflow caused by a glacial lake outburst destroyed the natural dam that impounded Lake Issyk, significantly reducing its size. Restoration efforts have been undertaken to partially restore the lake to its former state.
The river's name is derived from the Kazakh word for "warm," referring to the relative lack of freezing during the winter months compared to other rivers in the region. The river and surrounding area are of ecological and recreational importance, supporting various flora and fauna.
