Groß Iser

Groß Iser (Czech: Velká Izera) was a village located in the Giant Mountains (Krkonoše/Karkonosze), historically part of Bohemia and Silesia. After World War II, it was located within Poland. The village no longer exists.

History:

Groß Iser was founded in the 16th century by Protestant refugees seeking religious freedom. The area, characterized by challenging terrain and a harsh climate, primarily supported a population engaged in forestry, glassmaking (through cottage industries), and livestock farming. Its remote location allowed for a distinct cultural identity and the preservation of local traditions.

The village saw an influx of tourists in the 19th and early 20th centuries, attracted by the unspoiled natural environment and the traditional architecture. However, the post-World War II border changes between Poland and Czechoslovakia led to the displacement of the German-speaking population. The village was gradually abandoned, and its buildings were systematically dismantled or destroyed.

Present Day:

Today, the site of Groß Iser is part of the Jizera Mountains (Góry Izerskie) landscape park in Poland. Only a few remnants of the village exist, including foundations of buildings, stone walls, and historical artifacts. The area is a popular destination for hikers and cyclists seeking to explore the history of the region. The name "Iser" refers to the Izera River, which flows nearby. The remaining landscape serves as a poignant reminder of a once-thriving community lost to the upheavals of the 20th century.
