Giovanni Battista Giusti (harpsichord maker)
Giovanni Battista Giusti was an 18th-century Italian harpsichord maker active primarily in Florence. He is considered one of the most important Florentine harpsichord builders of his era, known for instruments that combine a robust construction with a refined sound.
While relatively little is known about Giusti's life, his surviving instruments provide evidence of his craftsmanship. He built single-manual and double-manual harpsichords, often employing spruce for soundboards and cypress for cases, typical materials for Italian harpsichords of the period. His instruments are often decorated with painted soundboards and elaborate casework.
Giusti's harpsichords are valued for their clarity of tone and responsiveness, making them well-suited for both solo and continuo playing. Several examples of his work are held in museum collections worldwide, allowing for continued study and appreciation of his contributions to the history of keyboard instrument making.
