Dummy Taylor (cricketer)

Dummy Taylor was the nickname of Herbert Sutcliffe, an English cricketer primarily known as an opening batsman. Born in Pudsey, Yorkshire in 1894, Sutcliffe earned the moniker "Dummy" during his early cricketing career, reportedly due to his perceived taciturn nature on the field and in the dressing room. Despite the potentially negative connotation, the nickname stuck throughout his career. He formed a formidable opening partnership with Jack Hobbs for England and Yorkshire. Sutcliffe was renowned for his strong defense, determination, and ability to perform under pressure. He played 54 Test matches for England, scoring 4555 runs at an average of 60.73. He died in 1978.
