Donald Atkinson (archaeologist)

Donald Atkinson (1886-1963) was a British archaeologist specializing in Roman Britain and Roman pottery. He is particularly noted for his extensive work on the Roman fort at Wroxeter (Viroconium Cornoviorum), including directing major excavations from 1923 to 1927. His meticulous recording and publication of finds from Wroxeter significantly advanced understanding of Roman military and civilian life in Britain.

Atkinson's research included detailed studies of Roman pottery, especially samian ware. His publication, Sigillata Terra, became a standard reference work for identifying and classifying Roman pottery. He also published extensively on other aspects of Roman material culture discovered at Wroxeter, including small finds and structural remains.
