Dix Range

The Dix Range is a mountain range located in the High Peaks region of the Adirondack Mountains of New York. It is notable for containing five of the 46 High Peaks, mountains over 4,000 feet in elevation considered part of the Adirondack Forty-Sixers: Dix Mountain (the range's namesake), Hough Peak, East Dix (also known as Carson Peak), South Dix (also known as Grace Peak), and Macomb Mountain.

The range is characterized by steep, rugged terrain and extensive areas of exposed rock. Hiking the Dix Range is considered a challenging endeavor due to the significant elevation gains and losses involved, as well as the lack of well-maintained trails on certain sections, particularly between peaks.

Access to the Dix Range is primarily from trailheads located near Elk Lake and Route 73. The range offers panoramic views of the surrounding Adirondack wilderness. The individual peaks within the Dix Range vary in prominence and difficulty to ascend, but all are popular destinations for experienced hikers and backcountry enthusiasts. The range also falls within the bounds of the Adirondack Park.

Historically, the area surrounding the Dix Range has been subject to logging and other resource extraction activities, but the mountains themselves have remained largely undeveloped. Conservation efforts have focused on protecting the natural character and ecological integrity of the range.
