Comin' Thro the Rye (film)
Comin' Thro the Rye is a 2015 American coming-of-age drama film written and directed by James Steven Sadwith, in his directorial debut. The film is loosely based on Sadwith's own experiences and his obsession with J.D. Salinger's novel, The Catcher in the Rye.
The plot follows Jamie Schwartz, a 16-year-old boarding school student in 1969 who identifies strongly with Holden Caulfield, the protagonist of The Catcher in the Rye. Jamie writes a play adapting the novel and decides to track down J.D. Salinger himself to get his permission to stage it. He embarks on a road trip to New Hampshire with a local girl named DeeDee Gorchakov, encountering various challenges and learning about himself along the way.
The film stars Alex Wolff as Jamie Schwartz, Stefania Owen as DeeDee Gorchakov, and Chris Cooper as J.D. Salinger. The film explores themes of adolescence, identity, creativity, and the impact of literature. While it draws inspiration from real life, it is a fictionalized account and does not claim to be a definitive biography of J.D. Salinger. Comin' Thro the Rye received mixed reviews upon its release.
