Christopher Sly (opera)

Christopher Sly is an opera in one act by composer Dominick Argento, with a libretto by the composer. It is based on the induction to Shakespeare's play The Taming of the Shrew.

The opera concerns a drunken tinker, Christopher Sly, who is found sleeping and is tricked by a lord and his servants into believing he is a nobleman. To amuse him, they perform an opera for his entertainment. This framing device provides the setting for a play-within-a-play, the "opera" component that Sly believes is being performed solely for him. While Argento's opera uses the induction as its central premise, the actual "opera" presented to Sly within the opera isn't necessarily a direct adaptation of The Taming of the Shrew itself but often utilizes similar themes or comedic elements.

The opera premiered in 1978 at the University of Minnesota, commissioned by the Schubert Club of St. Paul. While not as frequently performed as some of Argento's other operas, such as Postcard from Morocco, Christopher Sly is recognized for its clever use of Shakespearean material and its blending of comedy and pathos. It showcases Argento's skill in character development and vocal writing, providing opportunities for both comedic and dramatic performances. The role of Christopher Sly is particularly demanding, requiring an actor/singer capable of portraying both the drunken tinker and the bewildered nobleman. The musical style is broadly tonal, reflecting Argento's preference for lyrical vocal lines and accessible harmonies.
