Championnat de France Amateur (1935–1971)

The Championnat de France Amateur (CFA) was the name of the third tier of the French football league system from 1935 to 1971. It was the highest level of amateur football in France during that period. The competition served as a bridge between regional leagues and the professional Division 2.

The CFA was composed of several groups, typically organized regionally. The number of groups and the participating teams varied throughout its existence. Promotion and relegation between the CFA and both the Division 2 and the regional leagues were determined based on performance within these groups.

The teams competing in the Championnat de France Amateur were primarily composed of amateur players, although some semi-professional clubs also participated. Its role was crucial in developing and showcasing football talent, with many players eventually moving on to play in the professional leagues.

In 1971, the Championnat de France Amateur was replaced by Division 3, marking a restructuring of the French football league system. While the name "Championnat de France Amateur" was later revived for a different league in 1993, the original CFA from 1935-1971 represents a distinct period in French football history and a different level of competition.
