Anthony Martin (bishop)

Anthony Martin (born 18 August 1945) is an Irish Roman Catholic prelate, serving as the Bishop Emeritus of Clonfert.

Martin was born in County Offaly, Ireland. He received his education at St. Finian's College, Mullingar, and later studied for the priesthood at St. Patrick's College, Maynooth. He was ordained a priest for the Diocese of Meath on 7 June 1970.

Following his ordination, Martin served in various pastoral roles within the Diocese of Meath, including as a curate and later as parish priest. He also held administrative positions within the diocese, including Diocesan Director of Religious Education and Diocesan Secretary.

On 20 June 2003, he was appointed Bishop of Clonfert by Pope John Paul II. He was consecrated a bishop on 7 September 2003.

During his tenure as Bishop of Clonfert, Martin oversaw the administration of the diocese and addressed various issues including declining priest numbers and safeguarding protocols. He also participated in national and international meetings of the Irish Catholic Bishops' Conference.

Bishop Martin reached the mandatory retirement age of 75 in 2020. His resignation was accepted by Pope Francis on 16 July 2020, and he was succeeded by Bishop Michael Duignan. He now holds the title of Bishop Emeritus of Clonfert.
