253rd (Queen's University) Highland Battalion, CEF

The 253rd (Queen's University) Highland Battalion, CEF (Canadian Expeditionary Force) was an infantry battalion raised in Kingston, Ontario during the First World War. Authorized on May 1, 1917, the battalion was recruited primarily from students, alumni, and faculty of Queen's University. Its recruitment area covered Eastern Ontario.

The 253rd Battalion was intended to reinforce existing Canadian units fighting on the Western Front. After initial training in Canada, the battalion embarked for Great Britain. Upon arrival, the 253rd was absorbed into the Canadian Reserve units and did not serve as a distinct unit in combat. Personnel were dispersed to various front-line battalions to replenish their ranks.

The battalion was officially disbanded on September 15, 1920. The perpetuation of the 253rd Battalion was assigned to the Queen's University Contingent, Canadian Officers' Training Corps (COTC).

The battalion's colours are preserved at Queen's University.
