Uglich

Uglich is a historic town in Yaroslavl Oblast, Russia, situated on the Volga River. It is part of the Golden Ring of Russia, a collection of towns with significant historical and cultural importance.

History:

Uglich is one of the oldest towns in Yaroslavl Oblast, with its founding traditionally attributed to Yakov Svyatoslavich, a relative of Prince Vladimir the Great, in 937. However, the first documented mention of Uglich dates back to 1148. The town served as the capital of a small principality until it was absorbed by the Grand Duchy of Moscow in the 15th century.

Uglich is deeply intertwined with the tragic death of Tsarevich Dmitry Ivanovich, the youngest son of Ivan the Terrible, in 1591. Dmitry died under mysterious circumstances while in exile in Uglich. The official investigation concluded it was an accident, but popular belief held that he was murdered on the orders of Boris Godunov, who subsequently became Tsar. The event is a major turning point in Russian history, contributing to the Time of Troubles. The Church of St. Dmitry on the Blood was built on the site where Dmitry was found dead.
