Thaumas

Thaumas (Θαῦμας) in Greek mythology is a primordial sea god, son of Pontus (the Sea) and Gaia (the Earth). He is primarily known as the father of Iris (the rainbow), as well as the Harpies Aello and Ocypete, through his marriage to Electra, one of the Oceanids.

Thaumas's name translates to "wonder" or "marvel," hinting at his association with the awe-inspiring and wondrous aspects of the sea. While not a central or widely worshipped deity, his role as the progenitor of Iris and the Harpies solidifies his place within the broader Greek mythological narrative. He represents the elemental power and wonder that the primordial sea holds.

His role is primarily genealogical; he serves as a link between the older generation of sea deities (Pontus) and the later generation of gods and personifications. His children, Iris and the Harpies, play more prominent roles in various myths and legends, carrying out divine missions and representing, respectively, communication and retribution.

The scarcity of myths directly involving Thaumas suggests a less active role in the day-to-day affairs of the gods and mortals. His significance lies in his ancestral connection to the sea and his role in the lineage of important figures in Greek mythology.
