Ranjith (director)
Ranjith Balakrishnan, often credited as Ranjith, is a prominent Indian film director, screenwriter, producer, and actor primarily working in Malayalam cinema. He is known for his realistic and socially relevant narratives, often exploring themes of political corruption, family dynamics, and societal issues within the Kerala context.
Ranjith began his career as a screenwriter, gaining recognition for his work with directors like Shaji Kailas and Joshiy. He made his directorial debut with the film Kerala House Udan Vilpanakku Undu in 1998.
His notable films include Ravananprabhu (2001), a sequel to Devasuram, which he also wrote; Nandanam (2002), a romantic drama; Black (2004), an action-thriller; Thirakkatha (2008), a film exploring the life of a filmmaker and his muse; Pranchiyettan & the Saint (2010), a satirical comedy; Indian Rupee (2011), a film about real estate business; and Leela (2016), adapted from a short story by Unni R.
Ranjith's films have garnered critical acclaim and commercial success. He has received several awards, including the National Film Award for Best Film on Other Social Issues for Indian Rupee in 2011.
In addition to directing, Ranjith has also acted in several films, and has produced films under his production banner, Gold Coin Motion Picture Company. He is considered one of the influential figures in contemporary Malayalam cinema.
