Primitive Race (album)

Primitive Race is the self-titled debut album by the industrial rock supergroup Primitive Race, released in 1994 on Reprise Records. The album features a revolving door lineup of musicians, centered around vocalist and primary songwriter Chris Connelly (formerly of Ministry, Revolting Cocks) and producer and bassist Mark Blasquez.

The album's sound is characterized by a blend of industrial rock, alternative rock, and electronic elements, featuring heavy guitar riffs, programmed beats, and Connelly's distinctive vocals. Lyrically, Primitive Race explores themes of social alienation, political commentary, and personal struggle.

Key contributors to the album beyond Connelly and Blasquez included Dave Ogilvie (Skinny Puppy), Bill Rieflin (Ministry, R.E.M.), Jamie Muhoberac, and Charles Levi (My Life With The Thrill Kill Kult). The ever-changing lineup was a defining feature of the Primitive Race project, allowing for diverse musical contributions and styles to be incorporated into the sound.

The album spawned the single "Trip to Iowa," which received some airplay and MTV exposure. While Primitive Race did not achieve widespread commercial success, it is considered a cult classic within the industrial rock community. The album led to further iterations of the Primitive Race project, including later releases with different lineups and musical directions.
