Little Bird (film)
Little Bird is a 2023 Canadian drama film directed by Darcy McKinnon and written by Jennifer Podemski and Hannah Moscovitch. The film tells the story of Bezhig Little Bird, a young Indigenous woman who was forcibly removed from her family in Saskatchewan as part of the Sixties Scoop.
The film follows Bezhig as she navigates her adult life, struggling with a fragmented identity and a yearning for connection to her birth family and culture. Having been adopted into a Jewish family in Montreal and renamed Esther Rosenblum, she embarks on a journey to find her siblings and reclaim her heritage.
Little Bird explores themes of intergenerational trauma, cultural identity, forced adoption, and the resilience of Indigenous peoples. It highlights the lasting impact of government policies that separated Indigenous children from their families and communities. The film aims to raise awareness about the Sixties Scoop and its ongoing consequences. The film is part of a larger project of the same name, which also includes a six-part television series that provides a more comprehensive narrative.
