Khancoban
Khancoban is a small town located in the Snowy Mountains region of New South Wales, Australia. It sits on the western side of the Snowy Mountains, close to the border with Victoria.
Geography and Location: Khancoban is situated on the Alpine Way, approximately 60 kilometers southwest of Thredbo and 30 kilometers from Corryong, Victoria. It lies on the banks of the Swampy Plain River, near its confluence with the Murray River. The landscape surrounding Khancoban is characterized by mountainous terrain, forests, and open grazing land.
History: The area around Khancoban was originally inhabited by Indigenous Australians. European settlement began in the mid-19th century with pastoralists establishing sheep stations. The construction of the Snowy Mountains Scheme in the mid-20th century dramatically transformed Khancoban. The town became a major construction base for the western branch of the scheme, housing workers and their families involved in building the Murray 1 and Murray 2 power stations. The Scheme significantly increased the population and infrastructure of the town.
Economy: Following the completion of the Snowy Mountains Scheme, Khancoban's economy transitioned from construction to tourism, agriculture (particularly sheep farming), and supporting the ongoing operations of the hydroelectric power stations. Tourism is centered around outdoor activities such as fishing, hiking, camping, and exploring the surrounding mountains.
Features and Attractions: Khancoban serves as a gateway to Kosciuszko National Park. The town offers access to numerous hiking trails, including those leading to Mount Kosciuszko. Fishing is popular in the Swampy Plain River and nearby lakes. The Snowy Mountains Scheme's infrastructure, including the Murray 1 Power Station, attracts visitors interested in engineering and history. Community: Khancoban has a small, close-knit community. It features basic amenities including a general store, pub, post office, and primary school. Community events and activities are often held in the town hall.
