George Schaefer (director)
George Schaefer (1916 – 1991) was an American stage, television, and film director. He was primarily known for his work in television, particularly his adaptations of classic plays and musicals during the Golden Age of Television and beyond.
Schaefer directed numerous episodes of prestigious anthology series such as Hallmark Hall of Fame, Playhouse 90, and NBC Television Opera Theatre. His productions were often lavish and featured prominent actors. He won several Primetime Emmy Awards for his directorial work.
Notable works directed by Schaefer include Hamlet (1953), The Taming of the Shrew (1956), Little Moon of Alban (1958), Macbeth (1960), Victoria Regina (1961), Give Us Barabbas (1961), Abe Lincoln in Illinois (1964), Inherit the Wind (1965), Soldier in Love (1967), Elizabeth the Queen (1968), and Yes, Virginia, There Is a Santa Claus (1974). He also directed the film Generation (1969).
Schaefer's commitment to bringing high-quality drama and literature to a broad television audience made him a significant figure in the history of American television.
