Feng Meng

Feng Meng (逢蒙), also known as Peng Meng (奡蒙), was a figure in Chinese mythology, often associated with archery and the story of Hou Yi (also known as Yi the Archer).

According to legends, Feng Meng was a student of Hou Yi, the renowned archer who shot down the nine extra suns and performed other heroic feats. He was said to have been envious of Hou Yi's archery skills and sought to surpass his master. Due to this envy, Feng Meng is often portrayed as the person who murdered Hou Yi.

Different versions of the myth exist. Some accounts suggest that Feng Meng killed Hou Yi with a peach-wood club or other weapon while Hou Yi was resting or unarmed. The motive was generally attributed to Feng Meng's desire to become the greatest archer in the land.

The legend of Feng Meng serves as a cautionary tale about envy, betrayal, and the dangers of seeking fame and power through unethical means. His story highlights the tragic consequences that can arise from harboring negative emotions and acting on them. In some later adaptations, he is also depicted as stealing the elixir of immortality from Chang'e, Hou Yi's wife, although this role is more commonly attributed to other figures in the myth. The specifics of his character and actions may vary depending on the source and the retelling of the myth.
