Dean Barker (sailor)
Dean Barker (born April 18, 1972) is a New Zealand yachtsman. He is best known for his participation in multiple America's Cup campaigns, both as a helmsman and a tactician.
Barker began his sailing career at a young age, quickly demonstrating exceptional talent. He rose through the ranks of the sport, gaining recognition for his skill and competitive spirit.
He first gained prominence in the America's Cup as a helmsman for Team New Zealand, competing in the 2000, 2003, and 2007 editions. He successfully defended the America's Cup in 2000, defeating Luna Rossa Challenge. However, Team New Zealand was unsuccessful in their subsequent defenses in 2003 and 2007.
In the 2013 America's Cup, Barker skippered Emirates Team New Zealand against Oracle Team USA. After leading the series 8-1, Emirates Team New Zealand suffered a dramatic loss, with Oracle Team USA winning eight consecutive races to ultimately retain the Cup.
Following the 2013 America's Cup, Barker transitioned to helming for SoftBank Team Japan for the 2017 America's Cup in Bermuda. He subsequently raced with American Magic for the 2021 America's Cup in Auckland, New Zealand.
Beyond the America's Cup, Barker has also competed in other sailing events, including the World Match Racing Tour and various keelboat regattas. He is considered one of the most accomplished and respected sailors in the sport.
