Comentiolus (brother of Phocas)

Comentiolus was a Byzantine general who served during the reign of Emperor Maurice and was the brother of the later Emperor Phocas. He is primarily known for his military commands during the Balkan Wars against the Avars and Slavs in the late 6th century and early 7th century.

Comentiolus initially served with distinction under Priscus during the campaigns on the Danube frontier. He later held independent commands, often with mixed success. He was known for his strict discipline, which at times bordered on excessive. He also displayed a degree of ambition, which led to friction with other generals.

His career suffered a significant setback when he was defeated by the Avars, an event that led to his temporary removal from command. However, he was later reinstated, possibly due to his family connections or a reassessment of his abilities.

When Phocas usurped the throne from Maurice in 602, Comentiolus was one of the few high-ranking officials who remained loyal to the deposed emperor. His loyalty, along with his potential threat to Phocas's regime, led to his assassination shortly after Phocas seized power. His death was part of the wider purge of Maurice's supporters orchestrated by the new emperor.

While his military record is somewhat inconsistent, Comentiolus remains a significant figure in the history of the late Roman/early Byzantine army. His career highlights the challenges and complexities of command on the volatile Balkan frontier during a period of intense pressure from barbarian invasions. His fate illustrates the brutal political realities of the Byzantine court.
