Carlos Cardoso (journalist)
Carlos Cardoso (1951 – November 22, 2000) was a Mozambican journalist and editor, best known for his investigative reporting on corruption and organized crime in Mozambique. He was the editor and publisher of the independent daily news sheet Metical, which he founded in 1992.
Cardoso was a vocal critic of the privatization process in Mozambique during the 1990s, alleging widespread corruption and mismanagement. His reporting often targeted powerful figures in the government and business community.
On November 22, 2000, Cardoso was assassinated in Maputo. He was shot dead while driving in his car. The assassination sparked international condemnation and led to a lengthy investigation and trial.
Several individuals were convicted in connection with Cardoso's murder, including Anibal dos Santos Jr. ("Anibalzinho"), who was found guilty of organizing the assassination, and members of the hit squad. While the individuals who carried out the murder were brought to justice, questions remain regarding the masterminds behind the assassination and their motives.
The Carlos Cardoso murder case remains a significant event in Mozambican history, highlighting the dangers faced by journalists who expose corruption and the challenges of achieving accountability for powerful individuals. Cardoso is considered a martyr for press freedom in Mozambique and his work continues to inspire investigative journalists.
