Beltline (automotive)

The beltline, also known as the waistline, of a vehicle refers to the line that runs horizontally around the car, defining the upper boundary of the body panels (doors, fenders, and quarter panels) and the lower edge of the windows. It's essentially the visual division between the body of the car and the greenhouse (the windowed area). The beltline is a significant styling feature that influences the overall appearance and proportions of a vehicle.

A higher beltline, for example, creates a more robust and secure feeling, often used in SUVs and trucks. A lower beltline can give a vehicle a more open and airy feel, common in older designs and some sports cars. The shape, height, and character lines incorporated into the beltline can significantly impact the car's perceived sportiness, elegance, or ruggedness. Modern designs often feature rising beltlines, sloping upwards towards the rear of the vehicle.
