Barry Jones (boxer)
Barry Jones (born December 6, 1974) is a Welsh former professional boxer who competed from 1994 to 2007. He is best known for winning the WBO light-welterweight title in 1997.
Career
Jones turned professional in 1994 and quickly rose through the ranks of the British boxing scene. His aggressive style and punching power made him a popular fighter. He secured the WBO Inter-Continental light-welterweight title in 1996, paving the way for a world title shot.
WBO Light-Welterweight Champion
On December 19, 1997, Jones defeated Andy Holligan by a ninth-round technical knockout in Cardiff to win the WBO light-welterweight title. This victory marked a significant achievement in Welsh boxing history.
Title Defense and Subsequent Career
Jones made one successful defense of his WBO title, defeating Wilson Palacio in March 1998. However, he lost the title to Giovanni Parisi later that year in Italy.
Following the loss to Parisi, Jones continued to box, competing for various titles but without regaining a world championship. He faced several notable opponents during the remainder of his career.
Retirement
Barry Jones retired from professional boxing in 2007. Since retiring, he has remained involved in boxing as a commentator and analyst. He is also involved in coaching and mentoring young boxers.
