Žametovka
Žametovka is a red wine grape variety indigenous to Slovenia, specifically the Lower Styria region. It is one of the oldest grape varieties in the area, and its history is intertwined with the cultural and viticultural heritage of the region.
Historically, Žametovka was often planted alongside other grape varieties in mixed vineyards, and was valued for its productivity and its ability to add color and body to blends. It is a late-ripening variety, known for its deep red color, high acidity, and earthy flavors. The wines produced from Žametovka grapes are typically light-bodied and fruity, with aromas of red berries and herbs.
While not widely known internationally, Žametovka is an important part of Slovenia's wine heritage. Efforts are underway to preserve and promote the variety, both as a component in blends and as a single-varietal wine. Modern winemaking techniques are being applied to unlock the full potential of Žametovka, producing wines that reflect the unique terroir of the Lower Styria region. The grape is also known locally as črnina, which translates to 'black one', reflecting the dark hue of its grapes and wines.
