Parafoil

A parafoil is a non-rigid airfoil, often made of fabric, that achieves its shape and lift from the pressure of air flowing through and around it. Unlike a rigid wing, a parafoil is flexible and requires inflation to maintain its form and aerodynamic properties. This inflation is typically achieved through strategically placed openings on the leading edge of the parafoil, allowing ram-air to fill internal cells.

Parafoils are commonly used in various applications, including:

• Kites: Recreational kites often employ parafoil designs for their ease of packing, stability, and lift generation.
• Paragliding: Paragliders utilize large, rectangular parafoils to soar and glide through the air.
• Powered Parachutes (PPCs): PPCs use a motor and propeller to provide thrust while employing a parafoil wing for lift.
• Ram-Air Parachutes: Used in skydiving, these parachutes provide controllable descent and allow for accurate landings.
• Cargo Delivery: Parafoils can be used to deliver supplies and equipment to remote or inaccessible locations.
• Scientific Research: Parafoils are sometimes employed for aerial data collection and atmospheric research.

The performance of a parafoil is affected by factors such as its shape, size, fabric porosity, bridle configuration, and the prevailing wind conditions. Different parafoil designs are optimized for specific applications, balancing lift, drag, stability, and maneuverability.
