Cabin Pressure (radio series)
Cabin Pressure is a British sitcom radio series written and created by John Finnemore, broadcast on BBC Radio 4 between 2008 and 2014. The series follows the lives of the eccentric crew of the small charter airline MJN Air, consisting of Captain Martin Crieff (Benedict Cumberbatch), First Officer Douglas Richardson (Roger Allam), steward Arthur Shappey (John Finnemore), and owner Carolyn Knapp-Shappey (Stephanie Cole).
The humor of Cabin Pressure derives from the interplay between the characters, particularly the dynamic between the meticulously organized and morally upright Martin and the more relaxed and often scheming Douglas. Arthur's naivety and boundless enthusiasm, coupled with Carolyn's pragmatic and cost-conscious approach to running the airline, further contribute to the comedic situations.
Each episode typically involves a charter flight to a different and often obscure location, providing a backdrop for the characters' interactions and mishaps. The series is known for its clever writing, wordplay, running gags, and detailed character development.
Cabin Pressure garnered a significant following during its run and has been praised for its originality, wit, and strong performances. It has won several awards, including the Writers' Guild Award for Best Radio Comedy and multiple Sony Radio Academy Awards. The series concluded after four series and a two-part special, with a total of 27 episodes. The final episode, "Zurich," was broadcast on Christmas Eve 2014.
