Yeats (crater)
Yeats is a prominent impact crater located on Mercury. It is situated within the Caloris Basin, one of the largest impact basins in the solar system. The crater is named after the Irish poet William Butler Yeats.
Yeats exhibits a well-defined rim and a terraced inner wall. Its floor is relatively smooth and contains evidence of past volcanism, indicating that the crater has been modified by volcanic activity following the initial impact event. The ejecta blanket surrounding Yeats is also clearly visible, displaying the material that was thrown out during the impact.
The crater's location within the Caloris Basin has subjected it to significant tectonic stress over time, evident in the fractures and faults that crosscut its surface. Studying Yeats provides valuable insights into the geological history of Mercury and the processes that have shaped its surface.
